Description : |
The Anglicans were the first group at Gawler to hold regular religious services, initially meeting in the home of the Reid family, and in 1846 in the basement of Stephen King's Victoria Mill. Many country communities found themselves in a similar situation - meeting in hotels, schoolrooms or private homes, until funds were raised to erect a church. The Colonial Chaplain, Charles Howard, often rode the 26 miles on his 'well-known horse Luther' to take services at Gawler. In 1847 the foundation stone was laid for the Gawler Anglican church - the first church north of Adelaide. In 1857, when the building became too small, work began on the present church, built in the style of a 14th century English church. The church was built in stages over many years, with additions in 1885. Finally, in 1908, plans were made to add the tower, according to the original design. Completion of the building works after over 50 years were marked by celebrations on 28 April 1909. |
