Description : |
In July 1888 the clipper Star of Greece ran aground off Port Willunga, on the Fleurieu Peninsula, during a tempestuous storm. She had come to South Australia carrying guns for a fort to be built at Glenelg, leaving London in March and arriving at Glenelg in June. She departed from Port Adelaide on 12 July for the return voyage, and sailed into a terrific storm, running aground and breaking in two. Although ten of the crew managed to get to shore, 18 men drowned. Only 12 bodies were recovered and buried in the Aldinga Wesleyan cemetery, with the funeral service read by the Willunga Anglican minister, the Rev. EK Miller. St. Ann's Anglican Church, shown in the background of this photograph, was part of the Rev. Miller's parish. It was built in 1866. |
