Description : |
James Maughan was born in Durham, England in 1826 and became a local preacher at the age of 18. In 1862 he brought his wife and children to South Australia to set up a Methodist New Connexion church. Within months his services were regularly attracting 250 people each Sunday. In 1864 he organised the building of a church in Franklin Street large enough to accommodate 600 people. Maughan died in 1871 and in 1888 his old congregation merged with the Bible Christians in Young Street. This was the first church 'union' in South Australia foreshadowing the Methodist Union in 1900 and the Uniting Church in 1977. Maughan church became the main Bible Christian church in the city. From 1901 the Central Methodist Mission - today known as UnitingCare Wesley - became part of the complex. The modern Maughan Church now stands on the site. |
