Description :
The 1970s saw the beginnings of many experimental forms of worship in the Christian churches. Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar were newly dramatised interpretations of the teaching of Jesus, using popular modern music for a religious subject. In Adelaide this influence was reflected in the churches too. In 1972 Sister Janet Mead and her community began their weekly rock mass service in St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral, using modern music and introducing drama and liturgical dance as part of worship. John Watt of Port Adelaide Congregational Church produced a book suggesting ways the churches could explore more modern worship:
Ten years ago it might have been prophetic...to say that we in the church are facing a crisis in our forms of worship...Experimentation, tentative but somehow reassuring, is in the air. (p. 11)
Port Adelaide Congregational Church had historically been a lively congregation with a strong musical tradition. As well as modern music and drama, the church used electronic media in worship and preaching, offering some of their ideas to other church groups, through this book. It is said that today the congregational singing in the church (now Port Adelaide Uniting Church) is especially hearty on Sundays following a Port Power win.
