William Lockhart Morton, a Presbyterian minister, was first involved in 'rescue work' in Ballarat, reforming alcoholics and bringing them into the church. He moved to Adelaide in 1891 and opened Hope Cottage, an inebriates' retreat at Belair. Around this time the China Inland Mission set up a branch in Australia and Morton offered rooms at Hope Cottage for a Missionary Training Home. Graduates went to Aboriginal missions around Australia, as well as to Africa, China, Burma, New Guinea, South America and New Zealand. John Howard Angas was a generous supporter of the training college, and in 1898 gave the building which was formerly Whinham College at North Adelaide to become Angas Missionary College. Several missionaries who trained at the college lost their lives in China during the 'Boxer Rebellion' (the Yi Ho Tuan movement) from 1899, when 230 westerners and thousands of Chinese Christians were killed during a violent protest against western commercial, political, religious and technological influences. |
