Description : |
Photograph of painting by ST Gill of Horrock's expedition to the North West, depicting the invalid's tent on a salt lagoon. In 1846 John Ainsworth Horrocks had offered to lead an expedition, funded by fellow colonists, to explore the country north of Spencer Gulf. He was looking for country suitable for farming or pastoralism. His expedition included Bernard Kilroy and Theakston, both workmen from his property; artist ST Gill, to record the country; Mr Garlick; Jimmy Moorhouse, an Aboriginal man; and a camel, considered to be the first in Australia. The camel, named Harry, was the surviving one of a small batch that was imported in October 1840 from the Canary Islands. Horrocks had exchanged six of his cows for the camel, believing it would be highly suitable for work in the arid regions he proposed to explore. It would be more than 20 years before camels became the mainstay of Australian desert exploration. |
