Description : |
Herbert Basedow summarised the work of the Donald MacKay Expedition, with information on the geology of the Musgrave Ranges. The expedition, financed by MacKay, hoped to cover areas not previously explored, to fill in some more of the blanks on the map of Australia. While referring to names assigned by previous explorers, Basedow was also careful to use local Aboriginal names for water-holes and other landmarks. He also noted the effects of prolonged drought. The expedition then journeyed to Mount Olga (Kata Tjuta) and Ayers Rock (Uluru). Herbert Basedow was a doctor, anthropologist and geologist. He served as medical officer in remote areas of South Australia and the Northern Territory as well as serving as a leader of a number of exploring expeditions. Donald MacKay financed a number of expeditions including one in New Guinea in 1908 and Basedow worked with him on several of them. Subsequent to this 1926 expedition he conducted a number of aerial surveys of Central Australia. He also criticised the Commonwealth Government regarding their treatment of the Aboriginal people. |
