The Bible Christian church was founded in Devon in the late 18th century. Its first minister in South Australia was the Rev James Way. In 1887 the denomination purchased the former Joyce's Eye Hospital at Wayville with the intention of opening a boys' college. Initially the building was used to train young men for the ministry - this followed the closure of the interdenominational Union College. Dr. William Torr, a distinguished scholar and educationist, was invited to fill the position of school principal. Torr felt he needed further training before taking on the role, and spent some time in the UK before returning to Adelaide for the opening of the boys' school component of the college in 1892. Under him the school flourished, implementing progressive ideas about boys' education, and including agricultural curricula. In 1900 when 'Methodist Union' took place and the local Bible Christian, Primitive Methodist, and Wesleyan churches joined together to become the Methodist Church of South Australia, the prior existence of the prestigious Prince Alfred College resulted in Way College becoming Methodist Ladies College - now known as Annesley College. |
