Description : |
While Winnecke identified landmarks previously noted by Ernest Giles, the scientific staff continued to make good collections of specimens. The camp at Reedy Creek had been particulary profitable. New specimens of cycads, and a previously unknown land snail were collected along with a rare lizard sent by a pastoralist in the area. The scientists had startled a number of Aboriginal people who ran away, abandoning all their weapons. These were added to the ethnological collections. A small group prepared for a side trip to Ayers Rock (Uluru) and if possible Mount Olga (Kata Tjuta). Winnecke was the leader of the Horn Scientific Exploring Expedition, sponsored by William Austin Horn a wealthy pastoralist and miner. The expedition staff included Professor Baldwin Spencer from the University of Melbourne, Professor Ralph Tate and GA Keartland who would later serve on the ill fated Calvert Expedition. The expedition's brief was to examine the natural history of the MacDonnell Ranges. While much had been explored before, an in-depth scientific study of the region had not been done. The results of the expedition were published in four volumes in 1896. |
