Description : |
In 1845 the first St. Patrick's Church was built on West Terrace as a school and temporary church, and was extended in 1870. There were 10,000 people present when the foundation stone for the new St. Patrick's Church was laid in Grote Street in 1912. The new church was opened in 1914 on the morning following St Patrick's Day, but was never completed to the full grandeur of the original designs by Woods and Bagot. The basic floor plan is that of a 'basilica', a form dating back to 4th century Rome and the time of the Emperor Constantine. The organ at St. Patricks was built by William Dodd in 1900 for the Hindmarsh Square Congregational Church and was purchased in 1926 when that church closed. |
