Description : |
Scripture Union was founded in London in 1867 by Josiah Spiers. Spiers took his Sunday School class to a service for children run by an American named Payson Hammond and was so impressed with Hammond's lively and informal approach to children's ministry that he founded the Children's Special Service Mission. The following year while holidaying at Llandudno he began telling children stories about Jesus as they played on the beach. Beach missions were to become a popular form of evangelising. Scripture Union held its first South Australian missions at Port Elliot in the summer of 1947/48 (The Advertiser, 12 January 1998, p. 14). However, preaching missions aimed at adults were being arranged from the 1930s by groups such as the Evangelisation Society of South Australia. |
