Records of the glass making firm of Clarkson Limited consisting of water colour designs for stain glass windows, full-size cartoons of window designs, minutes, financial records, photographs, printed items, share certificates, newspaper cuttings and poster. On his return from the Victorian goldfields in the early 1850s, Heinrich Vosz opened what is now Australia's oldest glass business, in Rundle Street, Adelaide.He was South Australia's first importer of plate glass. The business passed to two of his employees and in 1904 AE Clarkson, who had joined the firm as an office boy in 1889, became secretary and manager. The name of the business was changed to Clarkson Ltd in 1915 due to anti-German feeling during the First World War. The leaded and stained glass department opened in 1899, and by 1923 was employing 26 workers including two artist-designers. Although also suppliers of paints and wallpapers, glass design and manufacture was always the firm's specialty. Many South Australian churches contain windows designed by the firm. This design is for a window in St Bede's Anglican Church at Semaphore, depicting St Martin with the goose which is his symbol. |
