Our Boy's Institute (OBI) was founded in Adelaide in April 1888 as a junior branch of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). Within two years there were 500 members and in 1897 purpose-built premises were opened in Wakefield Street, Adelaide. The OBI was said to have the finest gymnasium in Australia as well as exemplary swimming baths. Like the YMCA, the aim was to provide constructive leisure activities and practical educational opportunities for younger boys, and thus prevent them from turning to lives of delinquency. The aims were similar to those of the Boys' Brigade but the OBI added a strong focus on the Bible and Christian teaching. Classes including Bible classes, bookkeeping, shorthand, drawing, elocution and carpentry were well attended. |
