Description :

This sketch and the preceding one by Benjamin Babbage reveal the diversity of landforms along the ephemeral creeks of the Outback. The tree-lined banks of the lower creek give way to the more open reaches and wide horizons further along. The extensive sand cliffs look imposing in this sketch, and should be compared with Babbage's descriptions of Elizabeth Creek and Corroberribera.

Benjamin Babbage was the leader of a well equipped South Australian government funded expedition that was exploring the northern portions of the colony, in particular looking for a route through the apparent horseshoe shaped salt lake that barred further progress. Although equipped for 18 months, he was recalled for being too slow, and was replaced by Peter Egerton Warburton, just as he discovered that there was a path through the lakes to the north.
