Description : |
The South Australian poet, CJ Dennis, together with Archie Martin, launched the illustrated literary magazine Gadfly in 1906 as a showcase for their writings, and as a commentary on the arts and Australian social life of the time. Dennis had been writing verse since the age of 19, when his first piece was published in the Laura standard. 'The Parson and the play' is a send up of the 'wowserism' associated with those who saw the theatre as sinful, using a stereotyped minister. CJ Dennis himself posed for the series of photographs of the parson, who is alternately shocked and excited by the behaviour of the girls on the stage. |
