Many architects have had a hand in the design of Adelaide's Roman Catholic cathedral. The original plans were the work of an English architect, Charles Hansom, in the 1840s. But it was not until 1858, under the direction of George Kingston, that the first portion of the cathedral - the southern end of the nave - was built. In 1860 a Sacristry Chapel was added. Twenty years later Peter Paul Pugin, son of a famous English architect, provided sketches to Bishop Reynolds for a completed cathedral. These designs were used when additions were built in 1887 and 1926. Seventy years later, in 1996, the tower of the cathedral was finally completed. |
