Steam navigation of the River Murray began in 1853 when William Randell in the Mary Ann and Francis Cadell in the Lady Augusta vied to be the first to successfully run a paddle-steamer on the waterway. Randell was a miller and his motivation was to transport his flour for sale at the Victorian goldfields. Cadell's first cargo was bales of wool.

The era of steam navigation of the Murray coincided with the development of the wool industry in the colony and wool was the most common South Australian cargo on the river.
