Description : |
Mrs. A. Thomas\' residence - \'Oriental\' at 16 South Esplanade, Glenelg. (The address would have been Albert Terrace at the time this photograph was taken.) Mrs. A. Thomas' residence, 'Oriental' on South Esplande Glenelg. This house has three levels of lace work: the ground and first floor balconies are trimmed and balustraded with it, and the roof carries a small parapet of lace around the flag pole. Victorian architecture is recognized by the use of decorative cast-iron lace and ornamentation. Iron lace was introduced to Australia in the 1840s and became a popular choice on both public and domestic buildings, most notably on verandahs. Adelaide, by virtue of the date of its colonisation was developing and being built during the cast iron lace era. Much of Australia's cast iron was produced locally, with the designs being imported from England. The three primary foundries producing cast iron in Adelaide were The 'Sun' Foundry, Fulton's Foundry and Metters' Foundry. |
