Description :

Government House, Adelaide photographed about 1866.

This view shows Government House with the extensions built in 1855. The Governor Sir Henry Fox Young had wanted the vice regal residence relocated nearer to the River Torrens. The Government refused to do this.
Major extensions were made to the west of the original building and included a new entrance and entrance hall, large dining room, small drawing room and a ballroom and on the upper level three bedrooms and another bathroom. The additions are in the 'classical revival' style.
Further additions were made in the 1860s, mainly to the servant' quarters and in 1870s a conservatory and billiards room were added among a number of other additions.
In 1901 a series of stained and painted glass windows were added to the ballroom, to commemorate the Federation of Australia and the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York.
The Government House, Adelaide is the oldest vice regal residence in Australia.
