Description : |
Bank of South Australia, North Terrace The original Bank of South Australia building was located on North Terrace on land opposite to the site reserved for the parliament house. The bank was originally established as a department of the South Australian Company, but separated from that organization in 1842. The design of the building was undertaken by Prescott and Hancock and the building was completed by February 1841 and the bank opened for business in May. The building is described as Grecian Ionic in style. In 1866 the Bank purchased a new site in King William Street, but the building was not erected until 1875. The North Terrace site was sold in 1878 for 18,000 pounds. The new building in King William Street was designed by Edmund Wright, and in the 1970s a public campaign saved the building from demolition. It was renamed Edmund Wright House in honour of the prominent early Adelaide architect. The Bank of South Australia was taken over by the Union Bank in 1892, and ceased operating under that name. |
