Description : |
Warburton and his son Richard, together with Charley the Aboriginal man, are on an advance reconnaissance from the main body of the expedition. On 24 May they stop at what appears to be good grazing for their camels. Despite the discomforts of exploration they do not neglect to toast Queen Victoria's birthday. They moved on from this camp quite quickly: the camels did not eat the grazing, and there were hundreds of ants into everything. The creek they were on was unfortunately dry as were the lagoons it emptied into. They decided to return to their main camp, and two days later were drenched with rain. Warburton had set out from Alice Springs in April 1873 with a party of four Europeans including his son Richard, two Afghan cameleers and Charley an Aboriginal guide. The intention was to explore a route from the Overland Telegraph Line to Perth in Western Australia. However the intense heat and lack of water continually pushed them to the north and north-west, where they eventually reached Roebourne on the north-west coast in January 1874. Not before they had almost died of the extremities of lack of water, and had eaten nearly all of their camels. |
