Description :

Tree marked by Gosse in 1873 under Mt. Cooper

Tree marked by William Christie Gosse in 1873 under Mount Cooper, in Western Australia at 26 degrees 10 minutes S, 127 degrees, 57 minutes E. This tree was found by the Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition on 28 July 1891 at Camp 60. Three prior expeditions had been through this area: Gosse in 1873, Ernest Giles in 1873 and John Forrest in 1874. Each had blazed a separate tree. David Lindsay does not record whether he blazed the tree for the Elder Expedition, but certainly an expedition camel is posed beneath the tree.

Tree blazes were an important way of marking the passage of an explorer. It identified accurately where sights for position had been taken, and enabled those who followed after to determine where the explorers had been. The Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition had been given very precise instructions on how they were to blaze trees along their route.
