Description : |
Forrest's Rock Hole Forrest's Rock Hole, near Mount Blyth across the border in Western Australia at 26 degrees 15 minutes S, 127 degrees 44 minutes E. This was the Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition's Camp 32. The camel feed was good. There was also evidence of many Aboriginal people in the area with camp fires to the north, north-east and south and many tracks were seen. The expedition leader David Lindsay was concerned that so many Aboriginal people would leave little water for his expedition, without perhaps considering that his thirsty animals would drink far more water than they and that the camels would drain many water-holes. Trees at the camp site had been blazed previously by John Forrest and William Whitfield Mills. The Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition was one of the earliest major expeditons to be equipped with cameras; these were supplied by the University of Adelaide. The expedition doctor, FJ Elliott, was also the photographer. His photographs of the country travelled, the camps and the Aboriginal people are evocative and speak tellingly of the harshness of the terrain. |
