Description :
As early as the second century C.E. there are references to the Christian church celebrating the feast of Epiphany. By the third century, for the eastern churches, the feast had become second only to Easter in importance. Epiphany celebrates the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist, and the associated theological importance of baptism for believers. For reasons unknown, 6 January was the day selected to mark this, and in the west the day came to be associated with the arrival in Bethlehem of the three Wise Men and known as 'Twelfth Night' - marking the end of the twelve days of Christmas. For the Eastern Orthodox Church the solemn blessing of water remains one of the main features of the celebration. The Greek Ortrhodox community in South Australia has for some years marked the day with young boys diving for a crucifix thrown into the water at Adelaide beaches, on the Sunday nearest to the 6 January. In 2007, for the first time, girls were permitted to also take part in the event.
