For 19th century church-goers, the costs of erecting a church building were substantial. Church congregations committed themselves to years of financial burden when making the decision to go ahead with building works. Individual parishioners of every class gave large amounts from their own pockets, as for example the farmers of Encounter Bay did when the Victor Harbour Anglican Church was built in the late 1860s. Members of other churches frequently assisted with donations. Faithful members often contributed free labour as even the women of Myponga did for the building of the Myponga Anglican Church in the 1870s. This photograph shows the Rev. WA Claxton, builders and parishioners laying the foundations for the large Kapunda Baptist Church in 1866. The ambitious project cost 4,800 pounds (almost two million dollars in today's terms), to which George Fife Angas contributed 500 pounds.
