A banker and philospohical radical member of English parliament from 1832 to 1841, Grote joined the South Australian Association Committee in 1833, becoming treasurer later that year. An associate of the philosopher and economist, John Stuart Mill, Grote's parliamentary career was marked by his advocacy of the ballot to elect members of Parliament, but he was ridiculed for his proposed reforms and retired in 1841 to return to his passion for classical literature. The first volume of his History of Greece appeared in 1846 and the work was completed in 1855. In 1869 Grote turned down the offer of a peerage, preferring to dedicate himself to his duties as a trustee of the British Museum, and Vice-Chancellor of the University of London. He died in 1871 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Grote Street in Adelaide is named in recognition of his role in the establishment of the colony.
