A dolphin swimming in the wake of the Governor Musgrave, South Australian Customs Department ship. Dolphins in South Australia include the Common Dolphin, the Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin and the Short-beaked Common Bottlenose Dolphin. The dolphin seen in the Port River and vicinity is the Indo-Pacific Bottlenose dolphin. While the river has been declared a dolphin sanctuary much still needs to be done to improve water quality and public education. Dolphins appear to playfully interact with people and are often seen swimming in the bow waves of boats and ships. Play is an important part of dolphins' lives, and they can often be observed playing with seaweed or play-fighting with other dolphins. |
