Cape Northumberland on the south east coast of South Australia near Port MacDonnell. Cape Northumberland was named by Lieutenant James Grant, in the Lady Nelson, 3 December 1800. It is the most southerly of South Australia's capes and from here the coast continues into Victoria's infamous Shipwreck Coast and the treacherous waters of Bass Strait. Cape Northumberland was first marked with a lighthouse in 1858; as the cliff was eroded by the sea's actions in 1882 a replacement lighthouse was built nearby. |
