A pair of kookaburras. The species is also known as the Laughing Jackass or Laughing Jack. Kookaburras are noted for their call, a loud and prolonged laughing also described as a cackle or chortle. The birds are carnivorous and noted for their ability to catch snakes and lizards, also eating mice, frogs and insects. Kookaburras mate for life and the young remain with the family group for some time helping to raise the next generation. Kookaburras remain within the same area and establish their territory with the distinctive call. |
