Description : |
Colonial sketches, or, Five years in South Australiawith hints to capitalists and emigrants was written by Robert Harrison who spent five years in the colony between 1856 and 1861. At this time South Australia was experiencing a lack of rainfall and Harrison suffered in the hot, dry conditions. Perhaps this was the reason his comments on the state of the colony were not very complimentary.
For instance he writes that 'Spring and Autumn, can be poetically imagined to have taken flight' and elsewhere in the same chapter that 'continuous hot weather is not exceptional but an annual infliction in South Australia...the blast furnace system is a perpetual visitant...' In chapter three he begins 'On Saturday, the 21st January, 1860, the colony experienced a day of heat, dust, and hot winds perhaps unequalled in intensity in the memory of the oldest inhabitant.' |
