Berry's drawing of Uluru/Ayers Rock is the first by a white man of the most iconic natural feature of the Australian landscape. To match Gosse's description it has a most unusual shape, with the caves in the upper face well defined.

William Christie Gosse led the South Australian Government funded expedition west from Alice Springs in 1873. Its purpose was to explore a possible route to Western Australia.

In July 1873 Gosse reached and named Ayers Rock (Uluru) after Sir Henry Ayers, Chief Secretary of South Australia, which administered the Northern Territory until the Commonwealth took control in 1911. Earlier in October 1872, the rock had been sighted by Ernest Giles.

Uluru is one of the largest monoliths in the world. Spiritually significant to the indigenous traditional owners, Uluru and surrounding lands were handed back to the Anangu people in 1985. They manage these lands working with the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service.
