Description : |
An advertisement for coastal cruises to Queensland offered by Australian shipping lines features a palm tree and lush foliage and hints at the exotic. Winter cruises to tropical Queensland from Adelaide were popular and in the luxury liners Manunda and Minnipa of the Adelaide Steamship Company were cheap alternatives to overseas cruising. All the entertainments available on the international cruise ships were on offer: deck games, swimming pools, sumptuous meals and fancy dress dances. The cruise also offered a chance to explore inland from Cairns. Each of the major coastal shipping lines offered these cruises. Not only were they a cheap alternative option to the major cruise ships, but airline travel was still expensive and not yet an option for the average traveller. However costs for the shipping companies would escalate and by the early 1960s the coastal cruises were phased out. Airline travel was now the way for the holiday maker to reach their destination. The coastal shipping companies returned to their main business of cargo shipments. |
