Description : |
By 1873 the requirements aboard ship for emigrants were somewhat changed from those of the 1830s and later. The author provides information on the costs of the passage, the outfit required and also on the resources available in the colony for the education of the emigrants' children and the availability of libraries and newspapers. There is considerable detail for 'Persons coming out to the colony at their own expense' and the land order warrant system which entitled approved emigrants the right to purchase land after two years residence. Ineligible candidates for emigration are defined, and the costs for eligible candidates are listed. The average length of the voyage is now about 90 days and Harcus details the type and quantities of clothing that will be required during the voyage; the total quantity of luggage that may be taken free and the size boxes it should be packed in. There is also a list of materials that may not be taken. It is not now necessary for passengers to supply their own cutlery. Finally Harcus discusses religion and the various churches existing together with the libraries, newspapers and entertainments including sports available in the colony. |
