Description : |
The lifeboat shed and jetty at Beachport, South Australia. The lifeboat shed was almost as important as the lifeboat. It was required to protect the boat from the worst of the elements, but had to be capable of allowing for a speedy launch in the event of a rescue callout. The lifeboat needed to be fully equipped at all times and with this additional weight a conventional boathouse on the shore was unsuitable. Some experimenting was done, but the best result was to have the boat hung in a cradle at the end of the town jetty. The shed built over this was of course open at the bottom for swift launching and the shed could be accessed from the jetty. The lifeboat cradle and shed at Beachport jetty were demolished in 1953. |
