Description : |
Although Burra was a thriving town from the late 1840s, surprisingly, it had no local newspaper until 1876 when Frank Jarman and Henry Pether founded the Northern mail. The title was changed to Burra news and northern mail from 1877. In June 1878 Pether sold the newspaper to local school teacher Frederick Holder. Holder was apparently out of work when the new Burra Model School displaced his private school, and decided to diversify by taking over a fancygoods shop and taking up the post of town clerk. Holder changed the title of the newspaper to the Record, and later to the Burra record. Holder entered South Australian Parliament in 1887 and eventually rose to become a popular premier. In 1891 he gave up the newspaper and sold it to W.J. Davey. |
