Description :

The Eyre's Peninsula Tribune was established in December 1910 to serve the towns of Cowell, Cleve, Franklin Harbour and Arno Bay, and surrounding districts. The first issue was typed on foolscap sheets and mimeographed for distribution.

The newspaper was founded at Cowell by Charles Wallace. Wallace died in 1912 and the newspaper passed to George Wallace, and in 1920 was sold to ER Main.

The Tribune managed to outlive other smaller newspapers in the district. It absorbed the Kimba dispatch in 1941, which had been founded as a subsidiary by Main. On the death of Main in 1959, the Tribune was taken over by the Port Lincoln Times, who also owned the Areas Express. The Times combined the Tribune and the Express, under the former title.

From 1963, RC Braund of the Port Lincoln Times became the sole proprietor of the Tribune. In 1982 the newspaper was taken over by Northern Newspapers Pty Ltd, and in that year it won the Ampol Award for the best country newspaper in Australia, with a circulation of under 5,000. In 1991 the newspaper became one of many owned by the New South Wales based Rural Press, and subsequently became part of Fairfax Media.
