Description : |
Kangaroo shooter Norm Saunders poses with a dead Red Kangaroo by his Maxwell truck. Red Kangaroos (Macropus rufus), the largest living marsupial, are common throughout inland South Australia. 'Surprisingly for such a large and arid-adapted herbivore, it depends upon green herbage, the abundance of which determines the proportion of females that breed and the survival of their young.' (Strahan, p. 353). It is believed that the red kangaroo is more abundant since European settlement due the establishment of stock watering points by graziers and so hunting for hides and meat continues with no impact on population numbers. Older males can stand up to two metres tall, almost twice the size of females. |
