Description : |
Proceeds from sales of the Egotist were distributed to various charities, in particular going towards the establishment of the Adelaide Hospital. Charles Smith produced the newspaper largely to promote land sales at Port Lincoln, with Joseph Barnett as the publisher, and Archibald Macdougall was the printer. Smith spoke out in support of the Aboriginal population at a time when there was a lot of tension between the Aborigines and the white community. He also advocated gun licensing and opposed the move to close the Botanical Gardens on Sundays. There are also many humorous articles in the newspaper. |
