Description : |
Edward Eyre describes the extent of Lake Torrens stretching in an arc from west around to the east and the surface too soft and yielding to attempt to cross. He compares it to a sea shore, the dry salt lake contained within a continuous sandy ridge. All his efforts, the constant struggle and search for water had been for nothing. His passage to the north appeared blocked. Edward Eyre had left Adelaide in 1840 to explore to the north of the colony. Whichever way he went it seemed to him that his progress forward was blocked by an enormous arc of unpassable salt lake which extended from west of Spencer Gulf around to the north and to the east. Eyre's 'horseshoe' shaped Lake Torrens would persist for years barring the way to the north. There were however a number of gaps through the arc of salt lakes which would be discovered during 1858 by B.H Babbage, Peter Warburton and John McDouall Stuart.Meanwhile in 1841 Eyre would decide to travel to Albany in Western Australian to explore for a viable stock route to the west. |
