Description : |
Aerial photograph of the new satellite town of Elizabeth opened on 16 November 1955. Prior to its opening there was much conjecture in the press about the name of the new city. Suggestions of names such as New Town, Edinburgh and Munno Para were made. The Advertiser newspaper reported, 'if an official choice has been made, that fact deserves to be remembered as one of the best kept secrets of the post-war period.' The Advertiser also reported that sites for eleven schools had been chosen and, 'no housewife should have to walk more than a third of a mile at most to get food, groceries, chemists' supplies, and so on.' |
