Description : |
Election advertisement for Bert Edwards' campaign for election as an officer of the Adelaide Co-operative Society. At this time Edwards was a Member of the Adelaide City Council and Member of the House of Assembly for Adelaide. He was unsuccessful in his campaign to be elected an officer of the Adelaide Co-operative Society. Bert Edwards was convicted of buggery in 1931 on the evidence of a convicted prisoner, and expelled from the Labor Party. His reputation in the West End of Adelaide as a benefactor and supporter of the disadvantaged was such that on his release he was re-elected to Adelaide City Council. He remained a councillor until his death in 1963. The prosecution of Bert Edwards is the subject of a play, 'King of the West End', written by Adelaide gay activist, Ian Purcell, AM. |
