Description :

A flyer authorised by the Metal Trades Federation (S.A. Branch) opposing the 1951 Constitution Alterations referendum.

In 1951 the High Court of Australia declared the Communist Party Dissolution Act, 1950, beyond the powers of the Commonwealth Parliament. In response, Prime Minister Menzies put a referendum to the Australian people seeking the power to make laws in respect of communists for the security of Australia.

The referendum narrowly failed with 49.4% and three states, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania, voting yes. In South Australia 52.71% voted against the measure.
