Description : |
The portrait of William Richards, was originally painted as a miniature on ivory, by James Tonkin of Cornwall. The artwork was most likely created in Penzance, where both Tonkin and Richards resided. The artist, James Tonkin was a flour dealer and grocer of Penzance, Cornwall. He was also known as a miniature painter and lithographer, as well as a composer of music. Tonkin died at Newlyn, Cornwall 20 June 1837. Richards was born in Cornwall 19 March 1796, he arrived in South Australia with other Cornish settlers on the Java, 6 February 1840. Richards died 17 June 1866, and was buried at Angaston. The State Library holds the diary Richards made on his journey out to South Australia on the Java, 1840. Click here to see example of diary. |
