The jetty at Port Germein The jetty at Port Germein was for many years the longest in South Australia. The jetty has been closed to shipping since 1959, shortened by storm damage, and its place as the longest has been taken over by the jetty at Port Bonython. Port Germein is on the northern side of Germein Bay, with Port Pirie to its south. Despite the proximity of this port, Port Germein developed as a substantial port in its own right. The jetty was opened in 1881, and extensions were immediately called for if the jetty was to reach sufficiently deep water for large sailing ships. These were finally added in 1883, at which time the jetty's length was 5459 feet (1664 metres). Despite the closeness of both Port Pirie and Wallaroo, Port Germein, three years prior to the photograph, loaded a total of 19 vessels during the 1888 wheat season. The large ship, Archibald Russell was the last to load at the port in 1939; but smaller vessels continued to use it spasmodically until the port was closed in 1959. |
