The inaugural government funded Adelaide International Film Festival premiered in 2003, with screenings, special events and forums presented in various cinemas and locations. An earlier an independently financed Adelaide Film Festival had been held from 1959 to 1980. From 2005, the publicly funded festival was titled the Adelaide Film Festival.
The Adelaide Film Festival of the 2000s is a biennial event held over two weeks in February, running in the years between the Adelaide Festival of Arts, just before the WOMADelaide world music festival. The moving image in various formats is presented, from film and video to online and new media screenings with installations, exhibitions and live performances. Workshops and forums are also conducted during the two weeks' duration of the festival. It is the only Australian film festival that both screens and finances films. Highlights of the Film Festival are the presentation of dedicated awards. The SA Short Screen Awards (formerly Zoom Awards) recognise 'talent in drama, animation, documentary and comedy as well as the best craft achievements in editing, cinematography, design and composition'; the Zoom Best Film award in 2003 was won by Matthew Phipps for Quarter Mile. The Don Dunstan Award recognises outstanding contribution by an individual to the Australian film industry. In 2003 this award was presented to Australian Indigenous actor David Gulpilil (Adelaide International Film Festival). |
