Poster for Australian Dance Theatre's Furioso, choreographed in 1993 by Meryl Tankard, the company's artistic director. Furioso premiered on 8 July 1993 at the Playhouse, Adelaide Festival Centre, and was toured nationally and internationally between 1993 and 1999. The choreography for the piece included sections in which the dancers moved through the air, suspended by ropes and harnesses. The Australian Dance Theatre was established in Adelaide in 1965 by Elizabeth Cameron Dalman and is still based in South Australia. The company's dancers are trained in a number of dance disciplines and also in other types of movement such as ashtanga yoga and martial arts. Australian Dance Theatre's repertoire is shaped by the artistic director, currently Garry Stewart (since 1999). Stewart's dance style is fast, demanding and uncompromising. |
