Description : |
The founder of the Scout movement, Lord Baden-Powell was noted for his unorthodox military methods. and Whilst serving in India with the British Army he published "Aids to scouting", a text book written for army purposes which stressed initative and acceptance of responsibility. Educators asked Baden Powell if he would adapt the book into a children's version, which he did and in 1907 Baden-Powell ran an experimental camp at Brownsea Island with twenty boys. The methods in "Aids to scouting" and the camp were a success and in 1908 he published his book "Scouting for boys". In South Australia, a number of Scout troops had been established by 1908. Official registraion began in 1909 and by December 1909 there were 49 units registered. |
