Description : |
In November 1839 Governor George Gawler and Charles Sturt led an expedition up the River Murray to the North West Bend and across country in search of fertile regions. Charles Sturt reported on the events of the expedition. They were accompanied by Gawler's daughter Julia and Sturt's wife Charlotte, whom it was thought would enjoy the trip on the river. Gawler wished also to assess the river as a possible highway for navigation and trade. On reaching the North West Bend Gawler and Sturt accompanied by Henry Inman, Arthur Gell and Henry Bryan set off on horseback to explore north across country. They were equipped with two barrels of water and a week's provisions. The country was drier than expected, and water quickly became unfindable, with the watercourses dry. The weather was hot, mirage distorting the horizon. One of the water barrels leaked and the horses suffered from the lack of water. Gawler decided the expedition must return to the main camp, with Gawler and Henry Bryan moving ahead of the rest of the group in order to send back help and water as quickly as possible. Bryan was separated from Gawler and became lost in the bush. Despite extensive efforts by Gawler and Sturt he was never found. Mount Bryan commemorates him. |
