Description : |
The map shows the extent of the horseshoe of salt lakes which Eyre believed he saw as he travelled north of Spencer Gulf and the Flinders Ranges. He was in part fooled by mirages which merged the many salt lakes of the interior into one vast horseshoe of lake. This would bar exploration to the north of South Australia for 17 years. The map provides a description of the land Eyre traversed, with sources of water indicated. Prevented by continuing north, Edward Eyre resolved to travel overland to Albany in Western Australia examining the country for a viable stock route. He reached Albany in June 1841 with the Aboriginal man Wylie his sole companion. An earlier version of this map was published in 1843 in Papers relative to South Australia. It would be another two years before Eyre's own account of his expeditions was published and included this map. |
