Dr Xavier Mertz joined Mawson's expedition as a ski expert and mountaineer. He was also responsible for seeing to the safe transportation of the expedition's dogs from Greenland to Tasmania and their management once in the Antarctic. He shared these duties with Belgrave Ninnis. Mertz died on the fateful Far Eastern party, along with Belgrave Ninnis. Both men are remembered with glaciers named for them in Adelie Land. Skis were provided for the men, but in the prevailing conditions in Adelie Land the ice was scoured of snow and there were few opportunities for skiing. However with the example of Mertz, and his coaching most of the men practised using the skis. |
